Drug abuse refers to the usage of illegal drugs, while drug addiction is a recurrent, chronic brain disorder characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use despite negative consequences. Though initially voluntary, continued drug use can lead to addiction, which particularly impacts young people. Most illicit drug use begins between ages 16 and 17, often starting with cigarette smoking before progressing to other substances. Effective prevention requires action at both societal and individual levels. Parents play a crucial role by communicating openly with their children and cultivating positive mindsets without imposing excessive academic or social pressure that might drive them toward substance use. Controlling drug addiction necessitates parental guidance and a healthy home environment, with parents instilling values of empathy and compassion in their children.
